The Mount Read is a mountain in the west of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located on the northwest corner of the West Coast Range .

Like Mount Lyell , Mount Read has had mines, settlements, and other human activities for over a hundred years.

The main gold and copper ore veins in the West Coast Range occur along the geological formation of the Mount Read Volcanoes .

Hercules mine with conveyor system

The Hercules Mine on Mount Read was connected to the Williamsford settlement and then to the North Dundas Tramway by a 60 cm wide inclined conveyor system. The conveyor system worked automatically, was 1.6 km long and overcame an altitude difference of 550 m. The maximum gradient was 1: 5.

Huon stone slices

Despite the extensive mining and human activity on its slopes, Mount Read has unique stands of huon stone slices ( Lagarostrobos franklinii ) on its slopes.

Weather station

An automatic weather station of the Bureau of Meteorology was installed on Mount Read , which often provides extremely extreme weather data. The high values for rainfall in autumn 2006 are on par with those of Lake Margaret on June 30, 2006.

Earlier glaciation

To the southeast of Mount Read, in the Tyndall Range , one can see many signs of previous glaciation, as well as glacial lakes such as Lake Westwood, Lake Selina and Lake Julia.
