The Mount Lyell is a mountain in the west of the Australian state of Tasmania .

location

Located in the West Coast Range northeast of Queenstown , it was named by geologist Charles Gould in 1863 after his professional colleague Charles Lyell , who was a proponent of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. The higher peaks of the West Coast Range are named after opponents of this theory, the lower after its proponents.

North of Mount Lyell is Mount Sedgwick , south of Mount Owen .

Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company

The Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company , a mining and railroading company in the West Coast Range, was often called the Mount Lyell Company for short.

The Mount Lyell Company's mining activities focused on the mountain shoulder between Mount Lyell and Mount Owen and the west side of the mountain. On the east side of the shoulder was the prospect of old North Mount Lyell , where the fire disaster occurred in 1912.

In earlier days there was a small mine on the north side of the mountain, the Comstock Mine . In the 1970s, there was a mining section just west of the old Comstock Mine called Cape Horn - the west end of Mount Lyell was called the Cape Horn Spur .

There was a track of rails running from Linda around the south, east, and north flanks of the mountain. However, it was never put into operation.

The flanks of Mount Lyell were hit by forest fires and heavy rain and damaged by the exhaust gases from the smelting furnaces. The remaining vegetation and the tree stumps give the southern flank of the mountain in particular a peculiar appearance.
