The Mount Torment is a 8,120 ft (2,475 m) high mountain in the North Cascades in the State of Washington . It is located approximately 65 mi (105 km) northeast of the city of Everett . The first ascent took place on August 23, 1946. Its name comes from the community that carried out the first ascent because of "the hardship of a hot day with just one orange to quench your thirst". Since then, Mount Torment has grown in popularity because of the Torment-Forbidden Traverse , an unprotected alpine route to the neighboring Forbidden Peak .
The North Fork Cascade River has its source in a basin below Mount Torment and flows several miles west into the Cascade River . There are numerous waterfalls in this valley .
