The Eldorado Peak is a 8,868 ft (2,703 m) high mountain, he is the 25höchste in Washington. The mountain is located in the North Cascades of Washington state , about 27 mi (43 km) east of Concrete . It is located in North Cascades National Park in the headwaters of Marble Creek and just west of Inspiration Glacier . Other glaciers in the immediate vicinity are the Eldorado Glacier and the McAllister Glacier ; as a result, the Eldorado is surrounded by the largest non-volcanic ice sheet in the continental United States .

Orography

The Eldorado appears completely different, depending on which side it is viewed from. On the west side the mountain has a steep wall, which consists of vertical clods and small gullies. From the east side, the mountain looks like a small rocky elevation, surrounded by ice. The south side is a triangular wall that is framed by long ridges. The most popular and easiest route to the ascent leads from the south and east over the Inspiration Glacier and a moderately steep snow ridge. The Eldorado is a popular destination for climbers because it is easy to get to and because it is one of the 100 highest peaks in Washington, it offers magnificent views. Most climbers spend two days climbing, although one long day would be enough.

Routes

  • West Arete Rock Route - over the west wall - difficulty level 5.8 grade IV ( YDS )
  • East Ridge Glacier - Ascent Over Steep Snow Wall - Difficulty Level 2 ( YDS )
  • Northeast Ridge - Ascent over Ice and Snow - Difficulty AI2
  • Northwest Ice Corridor - ascent over ice and rock - difficulty level M3 to M4

geology

Compared to other mountains in the cascades, the Eldorado is built quite simply, as it consists of only one type of rock, Cretaceous orthogneiss , more precisely biotitic granodiorite . Only the lowest areas consist of other material, mostly metamorphic rock . There are only two normal faults: one on the east and one on the west flank.
