The Johannesburg Mountain is one of the most famous mountains in the North Cascades in the State of Washington . While it is neither among the state's hundred highest mountains nor one of the most prominent peaks, it is known for its pronounced steep relief, particularly on the dramatic northeast flank, which is only 0.9 mi (1.4 km) by 1,525 m towers.

The name "Johannesburg Mountain" comes from a confusion with "Johnsberg", the name of three mining claims on the northern flank of the mountain. Occasionally he was also called "Elsbeth".

Johannesburg Mountain was first climbed on July 26, 1938 by Calder Bressler, Bill Cox, Ray W. Clough and Tom Myers; they use a variant of today's most popular route, the East Ridge / Cascade-Johannesburg Couloir Route. These and other routes that end on the south side of the mountain are mostly climbing routes. But there are many other routes on the north and north-east side that are technically very demanding and expose mountaineers to dangers from falling rocks and ice.
