The Mountain Bike Challenge is an online game series developed by Greentube , the latest version of which was released in 2014. In autumn 2006 the Mountain Bike Challenge, at that time still called the Rad Challenge , went online for the first time. Due to its great success, six versions have been released so far.

At the end of August 2014 the current version of the game was published. In contrast to the previous versions, the game is not based on any real sporting event and instead offers fictional routes. The game can be played in English , German , Spanish and French . The Mountain Bike Challenge is available as a free app for Android and iOS.

Gameplay

The Mountain Bike Challenge is a simulation game in which a virtual mountain biker has to reach the destination as quickly as possible. The current version of the Mountain Bike Challenge is played via a free app on the mobile phone . There are currently eight levels to be conquered. These downhill simulations offer a varied mix of road and cross-country races.

design

The game consists of several fictional routes that can be driven in different variations. In order not to start over every time after a fall, the routes are equipped with checkpoints that are specially marked. The isometric perspective enables the players to recognize them ahead of time.

Level system

There are eight different levels ( Northern Woods , Dockside , Frozen Flats , Oil'n'Screw , Temple Path , Bikini Trails , Urban Garbage , Behind Bars ) which can be played one after the other. Of these eight levels, two are already unlocked at the beginning: Northern Woods and Dockside . Each level is divided into up to 6 tracks. After successfully playing a track for the first time, you get a star. To unlock further levels, you need a certain number of stars. Therefore, each level has to be played in different route variants and different tasks have to be solved. If you have collected the required number of stars, you can move up to the next level.

The game distinguishes between three different track modes:

  • Circuit Race : In this mode you have to drive two laps in a given time. If the goal is reached, you get a star. If you drive significantly faster, there is a second star.
  • Start-Finish Race : This game mode is a classic race, with a start and a finish. In contrast to the "Circuit Race", the respective route only has to be driven once.
  • Time Attack : In contrast to the “Circuit Race”, this is not about time, but about a certain distance. The player drives from one checkpoint to the next as quickly as possible. The time is reset after each checkpoint, whereby the next must be reached even faster. The game ends if the allotted time is not reached. As a reward, there are also one or two stars here.

Coins

Coins can be collected or purchased from the app store throughout the game. With this fictitious currency the player can buy protective vests or other bikes. With the purchase of the so-called "medicit" the player can refill the health display after a fall and thus reduce the waiting time. The various mountain bikes differ in speed and agility, making it easier to ride on difficult routes.

Older versions

In the versions up to and including Mountain Bike Challenge 10, the players were able to take part in competitions online around the world, sometimes in parallel to real sports events . The respective best time was recorded in various national and international rankings , which then had to be beaten. Previously, you could train in offline mode for the tournaments. In this training mode you could show the best drive of any player or your own and then compete against this “ghost”.

The older versions of the Mountain Bike Challenge were financed purely through in-game advertising . The cooperation partners included Sat.1 , ProSieben and the BBC .

Bike Challenge 06

The first version of the game was released in autumn 2006. The cooperation partner at the time was ORF . With the first version, you could choose between online and offline mode. Practice drives were used for qualifying. At the ORF Rad Challenge 06 there was only one route to choose from, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

Bike Challenge 07

The Rad Challenge 2007 took place parallel to the Mountain Bike World Championship. Little by little, new routes were unlocked. Before that, the players could train and then compete against each other in qualifying. The winner could win one of two "Fatmodul" mountain bikes.

Mountain Bike Challenge 08

On June 17th, 2008 the third version of the Mountain Bike Challenge went online. The SevenOne Intermedia was the official media partner of the game in 2008. The game could be played for free on the platform SevenGames.de. Another partner was the BBC, which signed the license agreement for the first time this year.

The Mountain Bike Challenge 08 was expanded to include the “ Great Wall of China ” route on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Beijing . The season ended in October 2008.

Mountain Bike Challenge 09

The fourth season of the Mountain Bike Challenge started at the beginning of May 2009. As in previous years, the players were able to compete against each other over a period of six months. The racetracks included Fort William, Heiligenblut, the Great Wall of China and Winterberg. Overall, the game was played by around two million people worldwide.

Mountain Bike Challenge 10

In May 2010 the fifth version of the game was published. In five courses (Fort William, Heiligenblut, Green Mountain, Chinese Wall, Winterberg) the players could compete against each other. In addition to a revised 3D environment and the so-called “driving physics”, players could also post their personal best times on Facebook in addition to the community clients. In addition, for the first time the players were able to design their bikes and dresses individually.
