Movimento Revolucionário 8 de Outubro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Movimento Revolucionário de 8 Outobro (German Revolutionary Movement of October 8th ), MR-8 for short , was a left-wing extremist political movement and guerrilla group in Brazil during the military dictatorship between 1964 and 1985. After that, it only exists as part of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro .

history

The MR-8 was formed from members of the Partido Comunista Brasileiro who wanted to enter into armed resistance against the military dictatorship that had ruled since the mid-1960s. He was explicitly committed to the ideology of Marxism-Leninism . The most spectacular act was the kidnapping of the American ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick for 78 hours on September 4, 1969, about which the film Four Days in September tells.

In the late 1970s, the MR-8 decided to give up armed struggle and joined the only permitted opposition party, Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB). The MR-8 increasingly represented nationalist positions and thus became isolated within the Brazilian left. When the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) was formed in 1980 , it was accused of dividing the opposition to the regime.

As the only left-wing group, the MR-8 remained in the MDB even after the end of the military dictatorship, which was reorganized as the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) from 1980 . This leads to the paradoxical situation that, as a formally still Marxist-Leninist group, it is part of a centrist party.

The MR-8 publishes a bi-weekly newspaper called Hora do Povo . Some members founded the Partido Pátria Livre (PPL) in 2009 .
