history

The oldest predecessor organization, the left-wing Corriente Patria Libre party , was founded in 1987. In 1994 it was recognized as a regional party in the province of Corrientes . In 2001 the unemployment organization Barrios de Pie was founded, which cooperated ever more closely with the Patria Libre and in 2006 united with the Movimiento Libres del Sur movement .

In 2007 the party ran for the first time in congressional elections. It integrated the Frente para la Victoria founded by Néstor Kirchner in the province of Buenos Aires and won two seats in Congress. In 2008 Libres del Sur left the Frente para la Victoria and moved closer to other center-left parties such as the Partido Socialista . In 2011 it became part of the Frente Amplio Progresista Alliance. In the 2011 election , the party gained only one seat in Congress; the candidate of the alliance Hermes Binner came second behind Cristina Fernández de Kirchner by a wide margin .

Content profile

The party cites social justice as the most important goal . In economic terms, it strives for a controlled economy in which key industries such as petroleum and gas production are under the control of the state. As a “strong state”, the state should control the economy, intervene in a guiding manner and “protect the weak from the powerful”. The party wants to anchor and expand elements of grassroots democracy in the political system of Argentina at all levels (state, provinces and municipalities). Furthermore, it strives for a comprehensive nature and environmental protection.

Internationally, Libres del Sur is aiming for a merger with other South American countries through the Mercosur alliance . In the current party program, which dates back to shortly after the Argentina crisis , the policies of the US under George W. Bush and his interventions are sharply rejected, and instead striving to join forces with other left-wing governments in South America.
