The Movimiento al Socialismo (abbreviation: MAS ; más means "more" in Spanish ) is a social democratic party in Venezuela .

history

It emerged in 1971 from a split in the Venezuelan Communist Party . It had the goal of becoming the third-strongest force behind the two large established parties Acción Democrática and COPEI , but often only got less than 5 percent of the vote.

Despite the support for Hugo Chavez in the 1998 elections , where the MAS won 9 percent of the vote, the MAS was involved in the 2002 coup against Chavez. For the 2006 elections, the MAS supported Manuel Rosales , the opposition candidate, and won 0.61 percent of the vote.
