Manuel Antonio Rosales Guerrero (born December 12, 1952 in Santa Bárbara del Zulia ) is a Venezuelan politician. He was governor of the western state of Zulia , chairman of the Un Nuevo Tiempo party and, from 2006, his country's opposition leader.

Rosales initially worked as a primary school teacher. From 1996 to 2000 he was mayor of the capital Zulia, Maracaibo , and later became governor. In November 2008 he was re-elected Mayor of Maracaibos.

In 2002 he took part in the putsch by Pedro Carmona against President Hugo Chávez .

In August 2006, the country's opposition agreed on Rosales as the opposition's unity candidate. He stood on December 3, 2006 against Hugo Chavez in the presidential election and was clearly defeated. Of people who supported Chavez, he said publicly on television that 33% were parasites that lived off the government. He later denied the statement.

In March 2009, he was charged with “illegal enrichment”. The former planning minister of the Caldera government , Teodoro Petkoff , accused Chavez of trying to weaken the opposition with the help of the judiciary. Rosales spoke of a political intrigue against himself. On March 30, Rosales went into hiding and a few days later reappeared in Peru , where he was granted political asylum.

In September 2009, an interrogation report was Colombian prosecutor public in which a Colombian assassin Manuel Rosales brought in connection with plans to assassinate Hugo Chavez. Rosales offered $ 25 million for the assassination of Hugo Chavez during a secret meeting in 1999 with Colombian paramilitaries .
