Moycarkey Castle ( Irish Caisleán Mhaigh Chairce ) is the ruin of a Tower House in Town Country Moycarky in Irish County Tipperary . It is located within a rectangular enclosure with round flanking towers on the northeast and southwest corners. The entrance to the Tower House is secured by a double killer hole.

history

The castle was the central fortress of the Cantwell family , lords of the Ormonde butlers who also owned castles elsewhere, e.g. As a village Mellisson in Baronat Slieve Ardagh . An Edmund Cantwell of Moycarkey Castle had a daughter, Catherine , who married the Hon. John Butler , son of Edmund Butler, 2nd Viscount Mountgarret . A William Cantwell is listed as the owner for 1640.

In 1889, Bassett's register of the county notes that “[the castle] has a large square tower and a tall surrounding wall. A crack in the tower was caused by lightning over a hundred years ago, ”and that the ruins were on the estate of a John Max .
