It was discovered in February 1931 by participants in the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (1929-1931) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . He named it after Morten Henry Moyes (1886–1981), the cartographer of the research trip .
