The Mozartkino is one of the oldest cinemas in the world and is located in the premises of the Altstadthotel Kasererbraeu in the middle of Salzburg's old town at Kaigasse 33. Today, the Mozartkino - the last privately run and also the oldest cinema in Salzburg - consists of two halls, the large hall (263 seats) and the Roman hall (136 seats), which is a listed building.

history

The history of the Mozart cinema begins in 1905 as Georg Barth from June 6th to 18th. December entertained the audience at the Lorieto Cinema Theater with a cinematograph.

After a guest performance by The Royal Biograph in October 1907, in December 1907 the visitors were shown moving pictures for the first time in a hall for up to 230 people. Franz Xaver Fried showed the Salzburg Chronicle with his "Original-Elektro-Biograph Riesen-Kinematograph". Twenty different numbers were played over a period of 2.5 hours and projected onto a 42 m² screen.
From June 1908 various screenings were offered, the program changed every 5 days.

In August 1909 it was converted to an Elektra Biograph, which projected onto an area of 30 m². The cost of a demonstration at that time was 1 Krone for a locking seat and 40–80 Heller for the seats in the stalls.

From April 1, 1910, and a renovation of the hall, Karl Friedrich Lifka from Linz ran a permanent electric theater with the endeavor to maintain the first-class performances and the international reputation of the Grand Cine Phono Theater Electrique.

In 1918 the Mozartkino was integrated into the operation of the Altstadthotel Kasererbraeu and the German film " Katharina Karaschkin " was shown.

In 1937 the Austrian fictional film “ The Pastor of Kirchfeld ” was shown to the audience , which up to this point was the most popular film in the cinema with around 55,000 visitors.

After bombing during the Second World War, the cinema moved in 1948 to the area where the Café Sezession and the hotel's breakfast room are today. In the course of this, the capacity was expanded to 600 places. Equipped with renewed sound technology, the Zarah Leander film "Gabriela" was shown on December 23, 1950 .

After the premiere of “ Sissi ” in 1955, the second part of the trilogy premiered in the Mozartkino in 1956 with “ Sissi - The Young Empress ”. Romy Schneider was personally present at the premiere of her film and spent the night in room 323 of the in-house Hotel Kasererbraeu . The hand-painted bed she stayed in is still unchanged in the room at the end of the hall. With around 50,000 visitors, Sissi became the second most successful film in the history of Mozart cinema.

For the premiere of “Traumland der Sehnsucht” in 1961, the Greek Queen Friederike was a guest at the Mozartkino together with her daughter Sophia and Juan Carlos (the future royal couple of Spain). The pictures for this hang like those of other prominent visitors in the lobby of the Mozart cinema.

On December 5, 1962, Luis Trenker also premiered his Heimatfilm and Bergfilm in the premises of the Mozart Cinema. Like Romy Schneider, Luis Trenker was also personally present at the premiere of “ His Best Friend ” and also stayed at the Hotel Kasererbraeu.

In 1980 the cinema was expanded by two new halls and operated as a buffet cinema. The then Café Kuckucksnest was integrated into the cinema area.

The largest renovation to date took place from April to December 1987. During the construction work on the modern cinema center, the remains of historic walls of a Roman Asclepius temple from the second century AD were discovered, which are still visible today on the left side of the Roman hall due to the specifications of the monument protection office. In the course of these excavations in the area of the Roman temple, a well was recovered, which is exhibited in the Carolino Augusteum Museum.
