Camino ( Spanish camino [ kamino ] "way") is a Mozilla -based Web browser for Mac OS X . The development was stopped in 2013.

Surname

The browser was previously known as Chimera , but was renamed on March 3, 2003 due to legal disputes and has not been further developed since May 31, 2013. Because of its roots in Greek mythology , Chimera has been a popular name choice for hypermedia systems. In addition to a system that the UCI had developed under this name, Chimera was also the name of one of the very first graphic web browsers. When choosing the name Camino , as with Mozilla's other project names, they were based on old American cars. The names Firebird (now called Firefox ) and Sunbird go back to models of the Pontiac brand - Thunderbird is a model of the Ford Motor Company , which was reissued in 2004. The name Camino is based on the El Camino from Chevrolet .

features

The otherwise common XUL interface, which is used in Firefox as well as in the Mozilla Application Suite or in their successor SeaMonkey , has been replaced by a native Cocoa interface on Camino . This enables, among other things, that a click on the green "+" button in the document window does not "maximize" the document window, ie does not stretch it over the entire screen area, but rather sets it to the optimal size for the respective displayed document. Like Firefox, Camino is exclusively a browser. Components such as Mail or Composer from the Application Suite are not included.

After a long development phase of Camino, the final version 1.5 was officially released on June 5, 2007. The browser was developed by the Camino Project, a community organization.

Features and special features

Camino, like Firefox or Mozilla / SeaMonkey, uses the Gecko Rendering Engine , a cross-program module for displaying HTML pages, and the XML-based description language XUL (but not for designing the graphical user interface). In contrast to Firefox, Camino also supports many native Mac OS X technologies, such as the keychain, Bonjour , Spotlight or the address book. Camino is a pure Mac OS X Cocoa program and not available for multiple platforms like Firefox. From version 1.0.2 Camino is available as a universal binary . Many Firefox features can also be found in Camino, such as the pop-up blocker, tabbed browsing or the Google search bar. Other search engines can be configured with a menu command. Furthermore, Camino contains a blocker for advertising banners and a download manager. Extensions, as they are numerous for Firefox, are few for Camino.

End of development

On May 30, 2013, it was announced in the developer blog that the further development was discontinued. The reason given is that the development cannot keep up with the speed on the web and it is therefore now unsafe to use the browser. The developers recommend all users to switch to more up-to-date browsers (called Chrome , Firefox and Apple Safari ).

A possible alternative to PowerPC-based Macs with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4, 2005) and Leopard (10.5, 2007) is TenFourFox , a PowerPC variant of Mozilla Firefox . Unfortunately, there is no alternative to the Intel versions of Mac OS X, as all current browsers require newer versions of OS X or macOS.
