biography

Mudrooroo was originally born under the name Colin Thomas Johnson and later changed its name to Mudrooroo Nyoongah, Mudrooroo Narogin, and eventually Mudrooroo. He is often referred to as the founder of Aboriginal literature, although his Aboriginal origins have not been proven and for this reason he has received severe criticism.

Mudrooroo had a rather troubled childhood. His father died before he was born, he was raised by government institutions, and his mother's identity is doubtful. Later he traveled extensively - including to Southeast Asia, India and America - and taught Aboriginal literature at various universities. He said he lived as a nomad and worked on his autobiography.
