Mustache (smell)
Muff is a specific odor that is usually perceived as unpleasant. Typically, poorly ventilated, damp cellars smell musty. A musty smell is also some fungi (eg Gray Amanita attributed) or spoiled food (for example, peanut puffs ).
The odorous substances are examined as Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds ( MVOC , Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds ), metabolic products of microorganisms and fungi, of which more than 200 substances have been identified. Such compounds are, for example, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (mainly responsible for the cork defect in wine, but also known as a microbial degradation product of the wood preservative previously used, pentachlorophenol , as a typical odor of older prefabricated houses) or 1-octen-3-ol ).
Mold stains in textiles, paper and on walls can spread a musty smell, just as poorly ventilated and damp textiles and poorly stored and therefore spoiled food.
Muff is also used as a "swear word" for conditions or people who have not benefited from (air) change for too long. Examples of this use are the slogan of the 1968 movement “ Under the gowns - Muff of 1000 years ” and the derogatory term “ Mof ” for a German, which is common in the Netherlands .
Muff is one of the two components that define indoor air quality .
