Muffenheim
The Muffenheim desert is an abandoned settlement between Ottersdorf and Plittersdorf near Rastatt . The first mention of Muffenheim comes from the year 790 in the traditions of Lorsch Abbey . The place probably originated in the 7th century, as row graves from the time of the Merovingians were found near the desert . It is assumed that the settlement was abandoned before 1510 and the area was divided between the neighboring communities of Ottersdorf and Plittersdorf.
location
The exact location of the place was for a long time in the dark and was only roughly recorded in maps from the 18th century. The first discoveries were made in 1973 when a gas pipeline was built. Franz Ruf, from Ottersdorf, subsequently examined the area more intensively, so that the State Monuments Office was able to carry out more detailed excavations in 2001/2002 when building another gas pipeline. It can be assumed that the vineyards were located on a Rhine island between at least 1310 and 1464.
Found location
As a result of the excavations carried out by the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office, finds from the 7th to 15th centuries came to light in the 300 m area. The finds included shards of wells, pit houses and garbage pits.
