Hans Geyr von Schweppenburg

Hans Freiherr Geyr von Schweppenburg (born October 3, 1884 in Müddersheim , † August 24, 1963 in Eicks ) was a German ornithologist and forest scientist .

Live and act

Geyr von Schweppenburg attended the Rheinische Ritterakademie in Bedburg up to the Abitur in 1904, studied in Bonn and Berlin as well as at the forest academies in Hann. Münden and Eberswalde until the forest science state examination in 1912. 1923 took place in Hann. He received his doctorate in forest science from Ludwig Rhumbler , and his habilitation in 1925 . There he became an associate professor at the Hann. Münden, where he taught until he left voluntarily in 1938. He then moved to Eicks and managed the castle and the forest in order to convert the low-yielding coppice forest into high-yielding high forest .

Between 1901 and 1963, Geyr von Schweppenburg published around 250 papers on ornithology, especially on bird migration , the dwarf flycatcher and siskin . In 1906 he had more than 20,000 vertebrate remains in Gewöllen of owls analyzed. In 1907/08 he took part in zoological expeditions to Spitzbergen and Bear Island . In 1913 he traveled to Sudan , in 1914 he covered 3000 km through the Sahara in southern Algeria , where he collected 217 bird hides. He worked with Alexander Koenig and contributed to his museum . During the First World War he lost both legs in the Battle of the Marne in 1914 . In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler .

Dedication names

Ernst Hartert honored him in 1924 in stone Lark subtype ( Ammomanes deserti geyri ). In 1954, Günther Niethammer named Choriotis arabs geyri, a synonym for the Arab bustard ( Ardeotis arabs stieberi ( Neumann , 1907)), and Alexander Koenig, Locustella luscinioïdes geyri, a synonym for the nominated form of the cane swirl ( Locustella luscinioides ( Savi , 1824)).
