Johann Ludwig Rhumbler (* 3 June or July 3 1864 in Frankfurt am Main , † June 6th , July 3 or 6. July 1939 in Hann Munden. ) Was a German cell biologist and Forstentomologe , in particular through its research on protoplasm and became known for micropalaeontology .

Life

After graduating from high school , Ludwig Rhumbler began studying German at the Philipps University of Marburg in 1884 , but shortly after switched to physics and biology at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin and the Kaiser Wilhelm University in Strasbourg . In Marburg he became a member of the Alemannia fraternity . After his doctorate as Dr. phil. with the dissertation thesis The various cyst formations and the development history of the holotric infusoric genus Colpoda In 1888 he first became a scientific assistant at the Zoological Institute of the Kaiser Wilhelm University of Strasbourg and was then from 1890 to 1892 assistant at the section for coastal and deep sea fishing in Oldenburg .

In 1892 he completed his habilitation at the Georg-August University in Göttingen under Professor Ernst Ehlers . In Göttingen he also joined the Hannovera fraternity . After that, between 1892 and 1906, he was initially a private lecturer and finally an adjunct professor at the Zoological and Zootomic Institute of the Georg-August University in Göttingen. During this time, he described first in 1896, the amoeba genus Pontigulasia and 1904, the family Allogromiidae from the kingdom of protists . He also presented fundamental work in the field of theoretical zoology, especially cell mechanics.

In 1906 Ludwig Rhumbler accepted a professorship for zoology at the Royal Prussian Forest Academy in Hannoversch Münden . There he headed the Institute of Zoology until his retirement in 1929, during which time he intensified his research in the field of forest entomology . He published works on cockchafer , beech wool scale insect and the pine wrench . His investigations into the development mechanics of the cervid antler were also important .

When the Forest Academy was converted into a university in 1923 with elective rectorate, doctorate and postdoctoral qualifications, Rhumbler was elected its first rector . In the following years he made a significant contribution to the high reputation of the Münden Forestry University. Among other things, Rhumbler was the doctoral supervisor of Fritz Schwerdtfeger .

In addition, he was a member of the board of the German Zoological Society (DZG) as first vice president from 1924 to 1925 and 1927 and as president in 1926. In 1927 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Rhumbler, a believer in a mechanistic view of life, was looking for a purely physical explanation for elementary life processes. The main focus of his research was the subject areas of protoplasm and micropalaeontology. His work in the field of cell research was in many ways a continuation and a logical expansion of Otto Bütschli's research . At the same time this aroused Rhumbler's interest in researching the protozoa .

Ludwig Rhumbler's scientific achievements have been honored several times, including an honorary doctorate from the Eberswalde Forestry University .

In addition to his teaching and research activities, Rhumbler also published specialist books. His most important publications include the anomogeneous surface covering of the living cell body (1905), the foraminifera (thalamophores) of the plankton expedition (2 volumes, 1909 and 1913) and the beech bark louse (Cryptococcus fagi) and its control (1914).

Together with Helene Rhumbler, he obtained the German edition of Thomas Hunt Morgan's book in 1909 under the title Experimental Zoology . In addition, he was the editor and editor of the third (1922) and fourth (1927) editions of Otto Nüsslin's 1905 Forest Insect Science . In it he worked in the bionomy formulas he had developed and which he had proposed in the journal for applied entomology in 1918 .
