Ernst Heinrich Ehlers

Ernst Heinrich Ehlers (born November 11, 1835 in Lüneburg , † December 31, 1925 in Göttingen ) was a German zoologist .

Life

After high school he studied medicine and biology and was after promotion to the medical doctor as a doctor operates. After completing his habilitation , he was initially a private lecturer and prosector at the Anatomical Institute in Göttingen. He was later appointed professor of zoology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , where he worked until his retirement and was, among other things, the doctoral supervisor of Jan Bohls and Ludwig Rhumbler .

In addition to his teaching activities, he mainly dealt with research on bristle worms and wrote the textbook Die Briststenwürmer (Annelida Chaetopoda) based on systematic and anatomical studies (1864). He later became editor of the journal for scientific zoology founded by Carl von Siebold and Albert von Kölliker in 1848 . On January 13, 1874 ( registration number 2125 ) he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

From 1894 to 1895 he was President of the German Zoological Society (DZG) and also a long-time member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Göttingen ( Societas Regia Scientiarum Gottingensis ), today's Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . In 1915 he was secretary of this society and as such informed Albert Einstein on December 18, 1915 about his admission as a corresponding member. Since 1897 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1925 Ernst Ehlers became an honorary member of the Leopoldina.

Ehlers was also known for his private art collection .
