Stephan Prause (born January 18, 1970 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) is a former German soccer player. In the top division of GDR football , the Oberliga , he played at FC Victoria '91 Frankfurt / Oder . Before reunification , he played in the DFV's junior teams .
Athletic career
Young footballers and selection players
Prause began his career as a soccer player in the children's team of the company sports association (BSG) semiconductor plant in Frankfurt . In 1980 the BSG delegated him to the top club of the army sports association , FC Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder). At the same time Prause became a student at the children's and youth sports school in Frankfurt. As a junior player of the FCV he was discovered for the DFV selection teams and played almost two dozen international matches between 1986 and 1989 with the various selection teams from the U-16s to the U-17s and U-18s to the U-20s .
With the older youth team, he finished fourth at the U-16 European Championship in Greece in May 1986 . At the youth competitions of friendship in the summer of 1987 in Czechoslovakia, Prause took 6th place with the DFV selection. From the final line-up of the GDR juniors, who started qualifying for the 1988 European Championship as U-17s in 1986/87 and then ensured participation as U-18s in 1987/88, the Frankfurt player was deleted in the run-up to the finals in the ČSSR. In February 1989, however, he was part of the squad of the East German team that took part in the U-20 World Cup in Saudi Arabia . As a midfielder, Prause played two of the three preliminary round matches after which the GDR selection was eliminated from the competition.
In the summer of the same year, Prause was appointed to the GDR's Olympic team, with which he played several test matches - including eight against other associations. Even before the start of the qualifying games for the 1992 Olympics, the team was withdrawn in the course of German reunification .
FC Forward Frankfurt (Oder)
At the beginning of 1988 Prause, who had just turned 18, was taken over by FC Vorwärts in the men's division and played for the second team in the second-class league from March of this year . For the 1988/89 season he was nominated for the 1st team, which had previously been relegated from the GDR Oberliga . In the East German second division Prause played two seasons, in which he played 63 games out of 68 points and scored 18 goals. He scored 13 goals in the 1989/90 season and was the second best goalscorer of his team behind Jens Henschel (22). In this season, FC Vorwärts managed to return to the league.
The 1.77 meter tall Prause made the leap into the first class without difficulty, he only missed a point game. In his 25 league games in the 1990/91 season he was used as a midfielder and scored four goals. In addition to determining the last GDR soccer champions, this season also served to qualify for the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. As the bottom of the table, the Frankfurters, who had converted to the civilian club FC Victoria '91 Frankfurt / Oder during the season, clearly missed the qualification.
Footballer in Lower Saxony
Prause then left the state of Brandenburg and joined the Lower Saxony amateur league team Kickers Emden . From 1994 he played with Emden in the third-rate Regionalliga Nord and was voted Lower Saxony Footballer of the Year in 1996. After Kickers Emden was relegated in 1999, Prause moved to the regional division SV Wilhelmshaven for the 1999/2000 season . When he was relegated, Prause returned to Kickers Emden in the Lower Saxony Oberliga. In 2005 he made it back to the regional league with the Kickers, but was no longer used there. At the end of 2005 Prause ended his contract with Kickers Emden and went to SpVg Aurich in the Lower Saxon regional league Weser Ems, where he was initially active as a player-coach. In the summer of 2009 he took over the training of the Lower Saxony state division club TuS Pewsum .
