Paolo Savi (born July 11, 1798 in Pisa , † April 5, 1871 ibid) was an Italian geologist and ornithologist . He is considered the father of modern geology (in the tradition of Charles Lyell ) in Italy and wrote an important work on the birds of Tuscany .

Life

He was the son of the botany professor in Pisa Gaetano Savi and brother of the botanist Pietro Savi and initially dealt with botany. In 1817 he was initially assistant at the chair for botany at the University of Pisa and in 1823 he was given a full professorship in natural history and in 1840 he was given the chair in comparative anatomy and zoology. In 1826 he was commissioned by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany with a first study of the geology of Tuscany and in 1827 he perfected his knowledge of zoology and geology while studying in Paris. Savi was instrumental in expanding the collection of the Natural History Museum in Pisa, of which he was director in 1823 until his death. He was also director of the Botanical Garden in Pisa.

In 1839 he prepared a scientific congress in Pisa and from 1843 to 1844 he published the Annali delle Università toscane . In 1832 he was entrusted with a report on the Volterra salt flats , the reorganization of which he then led.

He is considered to be a pioneer of modern geology in Italy, including a geological map of Monte Pisanino (1832) in the Apuan Alps . He also published on the metamorphic origin of Carrara marble , on fossils of the Miocene at Montebamboli , iron ore on Elba and on the geology and stratigraphy of Tuscany (with Giuseppe Meneghini (1811-1889)) and the area around Pisa. In 1858 he became a consultant for geological issues relating to the terme of Montecatini Terme .

He is also known as an ornithologist, wrote a monograph on the birds of Tuscany and first described the Rohrschwirl in 1824 .

He was a Knight of the Order of San Giuseppe of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In 1831 he became a member of the London Zoological Society and from 1855 to 1866 he was President of the Accademia di belle arti di Pisa. In 1862 he became a senator.

His son Adolfo Savi succeeded him in his zoology chair.
