Gaetano Savi (born June 13, 1769 in Florence , † April 28, 1844 in Pisa ) was an Italian botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Savi ".

Life

Savi was the son of Gaspero Savi and Maria Rogai. After he had initially started to study literature in Florence, it was thanks to a grant from the Tuscan Grand Duke Ferdinand III. makes it possible to pursue scientific studies at the University of Pisa, among others with Giorgio Santi (1746–1822) and Adolfo Targioni Tozzetti (1823–1902). In 1795 he obtained a doctorate in medicine. At the same time, however, he had also pursued his interests in chemistry, physics and natural history. From 1801 he taught experimental physics himself in Pisa, which gave him the opportunity to renew the outdated facilities of the institute. In 1809 he was appointed to the chair of botany. In 1814 he was also appointed director of the Botanical Garden. In this function he was able to acquire the botanical collections in 1829/1830 that Giuseppe Raddi , his childhood friend, had put together in Brazil and Egypt. In 1816 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. In 1839 he was president of the biological section of the first scientific congress in Pisa.

Savi's children were the naturalist Paolo Savi and the botanist Pietro Savi , who also succeeded him at the University of Pisa.

Honor taxon

The genus Savia of the Phyllanthaceae was named by Carl Ludwig von Willdenow in honor of Savi.
