Hans Friedrich Paul von Uthmann (born April 17, 1857 in Ober-Mahliau , † February 1, 1918 near Cambrai ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Paul was a member of the Silesian noble family von Uthmann and the son of the heir to Ober-Mahliau, state elder of Silesia and legal knight of the Order of St. John Maximilian von Uthmann (1822–1885) and his wife Klara Hedwig, born von Kessel and Zeutsch (1826–1887). Major General Erdmann von Uthmann (1790–1861) was his grandfather.

Military career

Uthmann graduated from high school in Oels and then attended the cadet schools in Wahlstatt and Berlin . On April 15, 1875, he was referred to the Emperor Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 of the Prussian Army as characterized portepeef ensign. There Uthmann received the patent for his rank on November 11, 1875 and was promoted to second lieutenant on October 17, 1876 . As such, he was adjutant of the 2nd Battalion from August 23, 1879 . In this position, promoted to lieutenant colonel on April 14, 1907 , Uthmann joined the regimental staff on May 21, 1907. This was followed by a deployment as a colonel in Frankfurt (Oder) from March 22, 1910 as commander of the Leib Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm III." (1st Brandenburg) No. 8 . Uthmann was promoted to major general on June 16, 1913 and transferred to the army officers with the award of the Crown Order II . On July 7, 1913, he was appointed commander of the 49th Infantry Brigade (1st Grand Ducal Hessian) in Darmstadt .

In conjunction with the 25th Division Uthman took after the outbreak of the First World War with his brigade at the battles of Neufchâteau and the Marne part. During the trench warfare on the Somme , he was relieved of his post and handed over command to his successor, Colonel Johannes von Dassel, on July 30, 1915 . Thereupon briefly transferred to the officers of the army, Uthmann was appointed commander of the 185th Infantry Brigade on September 17, 1915. With the large association he was still in action on the western front . As part of a deception measure for the Verdun offensive, the brigade was able to capture a larger section of the French position northwest of Tahure in mid-February 1916, bringing in around 500 prisoners.

In June 1916 Uthmann's brigade was expanded to a division and budgeted as the 185th division . His large association was used several times during the Battle of the Somme and Uthmann was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords, for his defensive successes on October 15, 1916. After the end of the fighting, the division was in trench warfare on the Yser and was used in May 1917 in the battle of Arras . There Uthmann was promoted to lieutenant general on May 20, 1917. This was followed by further trench warfare in Flanders and Artois and the battles in Flanders and Cambrai . During a stay in the Siegfriedstellung in the divisional headquarters near Cambrai, Uthmann suffered a heart attack on February 1, 1918 and died.

Uthmann married Brunhilde Hedwig Margarete Freiin von Meerheimb (1869-1901), a daughter of Major General Ferdinand von Meerheimb , on May 23, 1888 in Berlin .
