Ferdinand Ludwig Johann Freiherr von Meerheimb (born April 11, 1823 on Gut Gnemern ; † May 7, 1882 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and military writer .

Life

origin

Ferdinand came from the Meerheimb family . He was the third child and the second son of Lieutenant Colonel a. D. Jasper Friedrich Freiherr von Meerheimb (1785–1872) and his wife Karoline, born von Kleist from the Stavenow house (1800–1887).

Military career

Meerheimb attended the pedagogy in Halle (Saale) and the cathedral high school in Magdeburg . He joined the 2nd Infantry (King) Regiment of the Prussian Army on December 6, 1841 as a three-year-old volunteer . As a secondary lieutenant , he was a teacher at the Division School of the II Army Corps from 1846 to 1855 . In the meantime, Meerheimb took part in the suppression of the revolution during the street fighting in Berlin in March 1848 and in the same year took part in the campaign against Denmark . Here he fought near Schleswig and was slightly wounded near Düppel.

In the German War of 1866 Meerheimb was company commander in Bohemia and in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he initially commanded the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Landwehr Infantry Regiment in France. From December 25, 1870 to March 31, 1871 he was in command of Reims . Otherwise he worked from 1867 until his retirement for health reasons in 1880 in the secondary budget of the Great General Staff in Berlin.

family

Meerheimb had married Brunhilde von Ramin (1830-1909) on May 7, 1850 . She was the daughter of Wilhelm von Ramin, Herr auf Schmagerow and a Prussian lieutenant colonel a. D., and Henriette, née von Saldern . The couple had five children:

More important than his military was his writing, especially in the field of war history. He wrote many of his articles in magazines and compilations as well as two supplements to the military weekly paper on France and the French (1872) and military education and science (1873). In another booklet (1877) he presented a biography of Friedrich von Wrangel , which was also published as a book. He also provided numerous articles in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie . From 1873 until his death he was editor of the military literature newspaper . A work on Prince Heinrich was in his estate, ready for printing.
