Multistar is the name for a fire brigade combination vehicle that was developed as a joint project by Iveco Magirus from Ulm and Klaas Alu-Kranbau in Ascheberg . Distribution is in the hands of Iveco Magirus. Klaas takes on a supplier role. The Multistar 2 is a further development of the Multistar and was designed for fire brigades and technical assistance. It is a fast, variable and safe combination vehicle consisting of a telescopic mast with a fire engine or rescue vehicle . In this way, increasingly complex and multi-layered operational requirements can be met in a highly efficient manner and the tactical benefit can be increased.

The Multistar combines the advantages of a fire engine, a rescue vehicle and a telescopic mast platform . Therefore, it is particularly advantageous for sparsely populated regions and guards without turntable ladder vehicles and thus guarantees compliance with rescue deadlines and securing the level of protection. It can also supplement existing aerial rescue equipment for extensive storm or fire fighting operations. The Multistar is tailor-made for plant fire brigades who have to have a lifting device in addition to fire trucks . Since the Multistar combines several features in one device, it is an attractive option in terms of total costs.

history

The roots of the Multistar 2 go back to the year 2000. Iveco Magirus approached the Klaas company in a joint project to build a fire brigade combination device. This cooperation was then realized. At that time, the concept of two fire brigade combination devices with the name Octopus was presented at the Interschutz trade fair. However, for reasons of cost, these vehicles were not feasible for series production. After a further development period of three years, the first Multistar were delivered to China in 2004 . The previously escalating costs were brought under control through standardization and the use of identical parts. The Multistar 2 came onto the market at the beginning of 2010. The hydraulics have been revised here so that the extinguishing water pump and the pump for mast operation work independently of each other. The electrical system was converted to modern CAN bus technology. At the same time, the rail system for the aluminum crane has become more powerful, but also lighter.

chassis

The chassis of the Multistar is an Iveco Magirus Euro Cargo 180 E 30 4x2 with a 220 kW (299 hp) diesel engine that meets the Euro 5 standard. The wheelbase is 4590 mm and the gross vehicle weight is limited to 18 t. The use of a two-axle, lightweight 18 t chassis is made possible by the aluminum crane. The favorable ratio of dead weight to payload is unique in the world and makes the Multistar 2 very versatile. Its maneuverability is further improved by the rear-axle steering that can also be ordered. Iveco Magirus offers additional equipment according to customer requirements. It can also be built on other chassis.

Crew cabin

The Multistar 2 is supplied with an all-steel cabin in the fire brigade chassis series. With other chassis it is possible to install an aluminum cabin. Compared to other combination devices, the crew cabin is more spacious, which on the one hand increases the comfort for the fire brigade members. On the other hand, there is more space available when putting on the breathing apparatus. The cabin offers seats for a maximum of 9 people on request. Iveco Magirus offers the seat variants 1 + 2, 1 + 5, 1 + 8. In the cabin it is possible to have 7 breathing apparatus.

Elevating work unit and support

The aluminum mast, with its special geometry, a special erecting mechanism and precise cage control, is unique in the world and is manufactured by Klaas Alu-Kranbau GmbH in Ascheberg, Westphalia. The development is also unique to Klaas. The rescue height is 29 m, the working height is two meters above the rescue height at 31 m. The underground rescue is 14 m. The lateral overhang is 16.5 m. With a 7 m radius, 1.3 t can be lifted. With a lateral projection of 16.5 m, it is still possible to lift 500 kg. Work on the water or in the embankment area can be done ideally with this device thanks to the underfloor work area. The unusual mast geometry ensures that the rescue cage can also reach places that are difficult to access. The basket is designed for three people and has two multifunctional columns. These can be used, for example, to attach water cannons and push fans to the cage. During the fire fighting operation, 2000 l / min can be conveyed through the water supply on the crane. If floodlight bridges, a piercing mandrel or something else are attached instead of the rescue cage, the Multistar 2 mutates into a lighting bridge or extinguishing mast.

A secure stand is achieved by the 6-point support. The two supports in the middle of the vehicle can be moved horizontally and vertically as well as automatically and manually. The vehicle is still stabilized by the four additional supports under the fire engine. The cylinders, which are shielded in the square tube, protect them against possibly freezing water, contamination and damage. Underfloor lighting can also be supplied for an additional charge.

Extinguishing agent tank, pump unit and equipment room

The intelligent, space-saving attachment of the lifting work unit enables the extinguishing agent tank, the pump unit and the equipment room to be varied. Compared to comparable products, the storage space for fire equipment and the extinguishing agent tanks are also many times larger. This is mainly achieved through the internal water tank. The Multistar 2 can be set up with rotating walls, swiveling pull-outs, container systems and roof boxes. This best possible use of the volume of storage space is realized by the AluFire structure. When fighting a fire, the monitors for the extinguishing system can be operated manually or electrically remotely. The water tank has a volume of 1600 l. Optionally, the extinguishing agent can be supplemented with 120 l foam. The Multistar 2 can be customized thanks to the various construction and expansion options.

Executions

The fire engine with the telescopic mast can be combined with a fire engine (Multistar 2 "Fire") or a rescue vehicle (Multistar 2 "Rescue"). With the Multistar 2 "Fire" there is a quick attack reel with a fold-out hose window, removable transport boxes and various fittings in the equipment room. Everything is clearly stored. The hose baskets are also conveniently located in the equipment compartment. The HMI pump control unit is easy to use. No computer skills are required. The control unit is capable of remote diagnosis for telematics systems. Even when the flow rate changes or the pressure fluctuates, the Magirus FireDos achieves constant mixing in order to generate the foam.

With the Multistar 2 "Rescue", all equipment is stored in such a way that it can be removed in the order in which it is in use. The space is used well by rotating walls and rotating compartments. Many things are in easy-to-carry aluminum transport containers. Hydraulic rescue equipment can be removed quickly through the rotatable bearings. The one-hand locking increases the ease of use. In addition to the Multistar 2 "Fire" and Multistar 2 "Rescue", there is the Multistar 2 "Low Liner" and the Multistar 2 "Industrial".

The Multistar "Low Liner" has the tank fire engine equipment and is a special version for Great Britain. The equipment of the Multistar "Industrial" is specially designed for plant fire brigades, industry, airfields and other special applications.

Advantages of the Multistar

  • Linking telescopic crane and fire engine or rescue vehicle
  • Two-part aluminum articulated mast with a range of use from −12 m to +31 m, lateral reach 16.5 m
  • Elevating work basket and crane function (max. 1.3 t), endlessly rotating mast
  • AluFire3 body with more than 9 cubic meters of storage space and a load of 1.8 t as well as internal tank
  • customizable equipment
  • automatic support, 6 supports

criticism

  • The secondary escape route is not provided by an additional ladder on the mast, but only by a vertical abseil option
  • compared to a pure turntable ladder vehicle , the weight is higher
  • With a gross vehicle weight of 18 t and an axle load of more than 10 t, the vehicle is too heavy for areas for the fire brigade according to DIN 14090 (fire brigade access and installation areas)
  • the machinist must operate both the fire truck pump and the lifting equipment
  • tactically, the combination of LF and DL or TM offers far more possible uses.
