Munda (Solomon Islands)

Munda is the largest settlement on the island of New Georgia in the province of Western the Solomon Islands and consists of several villages. It is located on the southwestern tip (called Munda Point ) at the western end of New Georgia and near the coast of the great Roviana Lagoon .

Lambete, the largest village in Munda, consists of a number of shops, a branch of the National Solomons Bank, a post office, a telecommunications center, the airstrip and a small port. On the lake side is Agnes Lodge, a small hotel and currently the only tourist accommodation in Munda. The hotel also has the local bar (Munda Bar), a diving center and a boat tour company.

The medical care in Munda, the Helena Goldie Hospital is responsible, a small hospital west of Lambete, originally by the pastor and Methodists - missionary was founded JF Goldie and named after his wife.

From Munda it takes one to two hours by boat or 15 minutes by plane to Gizo and an hour by light aircraft operated by Solomon Airlines to Honiara . To promote tourism, Solomon Airlines set up a direct weekly flight between Brisbane and Munda in 2019 .

history

Munda Point was originally a coconut plantation , founded by the Englishman Norman Wheatley and later owned by the Australian Lesley Gill. During the Second World War , the Japanese built a runway that served as a rally point to Guadalcanal . The runway was discovered by the Americans on December 3, 1942 and the first bombing was carried out on December 9 by Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. Nevertheless, despite regular air and sea bombing, the Japanese were still able to use them. During the Battle of New Georgia in 1943, the orbit was captured by the Americans on August 6th. The runway still exists today and is used for daily flights to and from Honiara and Gizo.
