The Mundang is an Adamaua language spoken by the Mundang people in Cameroon and Chad .

distribution

The language is common in the Chadian prefecture of Mayo-Kebbi Ouest and in the Cameroon province of the Far North . The presence of certain ethnic Mundang or closely related ethnic groups is also signaled in Sudan and Kenya . In the Central African Republic , the péna corresponds exactly to the mundang.

Dialects

The Mundang language has three dialects: The Kaele-Mundang and closely related dialects differ from those of the Lere-Mundang in their accentuation and certain words, just like the Mundang in Torrock in the Pala region in Chad differs from those in Léré and Kaélé differs.

Sociolinguistic situation

Mundang, like all other national languages ​​of Chad , does not benefit from any official status.

Article 9 of the Chadian Constitution says: The official languages ​​are French and Arabic . The law establishes the conditions for the promotion and development of national languages.

The Mundang of Cameroon and Chad have founded an association for the promotion of the Mundang language, which is based in Léré , Chad. A dictionary in the Mundang language has been in preparation since 1955 and more than 100 books of an evangelical nature that have not been translated into any other languages ​​have been published on Mundang. Several Mundang authors also turn to non-church works such as narratives and stories.
