from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The concerto for harmonica and orchestra by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos was composed in 1955 and was commissioned by the American harmonica player John Sebastian Sr. (1914-1980).

It premiered in Jerusalem on October 27, 1959 . The orchestral part was performed by the Kol Israel Orchestra , conducted by George Singer .

After the premiere, the concert fell into oblivion. Many years later harmonica player Tommy Reilly began looking for the sheet music. It was not until 1979 that the concert with the London Sinfonietta and David Atherton could be recorded for the first time. Before that, there was already a production of the Bavarian Radio with Tommy Reilly as soloist and the Munich Radio Orchestra under the direction of Kurt Eichhorn .

The work bears the sentence names:

I. Allegro moderato

II. Andante

III. Allegro
