The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) was founded in 1893 and is a not-for-profit membership association that distinguishes itself through its outstanding work in the fields of urban design , urban planning , contemporary architecture , monument preservation and public art in the five boroughs of New York City deserves it.

The Municipal Art Society is located at 457 Madison Avenue in the left wing of the historic Villard Houses . The ground floor is open to the public. There is a gallery here with regularly changing exhibitions and the renowned MAS bookshop, which is known for its extensive collection of specialist literature on architecture, urban history and design.

The MAS awards a number of awards annually to people and organizations who have improved the quality of life in New York City through their achievements.

In 2001 the organization was the main initiator of the light monument Tribute in Light , which in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 let two columns of light appear over New York.
