Ruiz is a municipality in the Mexican state of Nayarit with 23,469 inhabitants (2010) and an area of ​​522 km². The seat of the municipality and its largest town with 15,000 inhabitants is Ruiz of the same name , other places with more than 1,000 inhabitants are El Venado and Vado de San Pedro .

The community was named after Mariano Ruiz Montañés (1846–1932), general of the Mexican Revolution and the last political leader of the Tepic area .

Ruiz is a little north of central Nayarit state. A good 95% of the community area is in the Sierra Madre Occidental , only the west of Ruiz belongs to the Pacific coastal plain. Almost three quarters of the municipality are forested.

The Municipio Ruiz is surrounded by the Municipios Rosamorada , El Nayar , Santiago Ixcuintla and Tuxpan .

history

The region, originally inhabited by the Cora people, was conquered for the Spaniards in 1531 by Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán .

After Ruiz was part of the municipality of Santiago Ixcuintla from 1917, it was elevated to a municipality itself in 1940.

On May 26, 2011, according to government information, members of the Zetas delivered themselves to members of the Sinaloa cartel in Ruiz on the main road from Tepic to Mazatlán in the course of the drug war in Mexico with members of the Sinaloa cartel in a one-hour firefight from moving cars, in which 29 people, some in riot suits and Wearing vests were killed. The police confiscated 14 vehicles, including two armored vehicles, as well as rifles, ammunition and hand grenades.
