El Nayar , also Del Nayar , is with 5155.7 km² the largest of the 20 municipalities that make up the Mexican state of Nayarit . El Nayar is located in the east of the state and extends far into the mountains. The seat of the municipality and its largest town is Jesús María . El Nayar had 34,300 inhabitants at the 2010 census.

The municipality of El Nayar is located in the east of Nayarit almost entirely in the Sierra Madre Occidental at an altitude of about 100  m to 2500  m . The municipality is predominantly mountainous, valleys make up a good 13% of the area. 76% of the municipality are in the catchment area of ​​the Río Grande de Santiago . The largest water area in the municipality is the Aguamilpa reservoir on the border with the municipality of Tepic .

The municipality of El Nayar borders on the municipality of La Yesca in the southeast, Santa María del Oro in the south, Tepic in the southwest , Rosamorada , Ruiz and Santiago Ixcuintla in the west and Acaponeta in the northwest . In the north El Nayar joins the Municipio Mezquital of the state of Durango , in the northeast to Valparaíso in the state of Zacatecas and to the east to Mezquitic in Jalisco .

Demographics

The 2005 census ("Conteo de Población y Vivienda") of the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía determined 30,551 inhabitants in the municipality, of which 15,432 men (50.5%) and 15,119 women. Between 2000 and 2005 the population grew by 2.4% annually. 45.7% of the population are under 15 years of age, and 49.9% are between 15 and 64 years of age. In 2010, 34,300 people were counted.

El Nayar is the ancestral land of two main ethnic groups in Mexico, the Huicholen and the Cora , who live in the mountains that gave them independence for a long time. When the Mexican state wanted to subdue them, they rebelled for large periods in the 19th century under their leader Manuel Lozada , El Tigre de Alica ("The Tiger of Alica").

According to 2005 census data, 21,867 (86%) of the population over five years of age speak an indigenous language (2010: 25,179 people), that is 10,976 men and 10,892 women. 16,864 of them are bilingual and also speak Spanish , and 4,641 speak only their mother tongue. The most common is the Cora language, spoken by 12,935 people.
