Santiago Choápam is a municipality in the Mexican state of Oaxaca . The municipality extends over an area of 312.1 km², the 2010 census counted 5413 inhabitants in the municipality. The administrative seat is the Santiago Choápam of the same name .
geography
The municipality of Santiago Choápam is located at an altitude between 100 m and 2500 m in the Choapam district of the Papaloapan region . 99.85% of the municipal area belong to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre del Sur , 0.15% are counted to the southern coastal plains of the Gulf. Santiago Choápam lies entirely in the catchment area of the Río Papaloapan . The geology of the municipality is characterized by mica schist , the predominant soil type is the Luvisol . About 97% of the municipality are occupied by forests (cloud forests, coniferous forests and rainforests).
The municipality of Santiago Choápam borders the municipalities of Santiago Yaveo , San Juan Lalana , San Juan Petlapa , Santiago Jocotepec , San Ildefonso Villa Alta , San Juan Comaltepec , Santiago Zacatepec and Santo Domingo Roayaga . An exclave of the municipality around the town of San Juan del Río is completely enclosed by the municipality of San Juan Lalana.

Of these, 45.1% spoke an indigenous language and 20.57% were illiterate. 29.15% of the residents of Santiago Choápam were registered as economically active, of which 0.95% were unemployed. The predominant economic sector was the primary sector (77.56%), another 7.31 percent of the working population worked in the secondary sector and 14.61 percent in the tertiary sector. 64.28% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
