San Ildefonso Villa Alta is a municipality in the northeastern part of the Mexican state of Oaxaca . The municipality extends over an area of 94.3 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is the San Ildefonso Villa Alta of the same name .
San Ildefonso Villa Alta was opened on January 23rd, the feast day of St. Ildefons of Toledo , founded in 1526. After this person and after its location ( villa alta : "high place") the new village and from him the municipality got its name.

The municipality of San Ildefonso Villa Alta is located at an altitude of between 500 m and 2600 m in the Villa Alta district of the Sierra Norte region . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre del Sur and lies entirely in the catchment area of the Río Papaloapan . The geology of the municipality is dominated by mica schists , the predominant soil type is the Luvisol . 85% of the municipality is forested, around 13% are used for agriculture.
The municipality of San Ildefonso Villa Alta borders the municipalities of Santiago Choápam , San Juan Petlapa , Santiago Camotlán , San Cristóbal Lachirioag , San Juan Yatzona , Santa María Temaxcalapa , San Andrés Yaá , Santo Domingo Roayaga , San Andrés Solaga and San Juan Tabaá .

In the 2010 census, 3,478 people were counted in the municipality. Of these, 64.58% spoke an indigenous language and 15.7% were illiterate. 36.11% of the residents of San Ildefonso Villa Alta were registered as economically active, of which 0.54% were unemployed. The predominant economic sector was the primary sector (60.39%), another 13.72 percent of the working population worked in the secondary sector and 25.73 percent in the tertiary sector. 37.42% of the population lived in extreme poverty. Most of the population is Roman Catholic .
