Guelatao de Juárez , also San Pablo Guelatao , is a municipality ( municipio ) in the state of Oaxaca , Mexico , about 60 km northeast of the city of Oaxaca de Juárez . The municipality extends over an area of 4.5 km². The administrative seat and largest of the two places in the municipio is the eponymous Guelatao de Juárez , the birthplace of the Mexican President Benito Juárez , to whom a museum is dedicated. The second place in the municipio is Río Grande .

The municipality of Guelatao de Juárez is located in the mountains of the Sierra Norte de Oaxaca at an altitude between 1500 m and 2100 m in the center of the Ixtlán district of the Sierra Norte region . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre del Sur and lies entirely in the catchment area of the Río Papaloapan . The geology of the municipal territory is of limestone - and sandstone - Lutiten dominated predominant soil type is the Luvisol . A good 55% of the municipality is covered by deciduous tropical forests , 44% are used for agriculture.
The municipality of Guelatao de Juárez borders the municipalities of Ixtlán de Juárez and San Juan Chicomezúchil .

In the 2010 census, 544 people were counted in the municipality. Of these, 13.97% spoke an indigenous language and 2% were illiterate. 43% of the residents of Guelatao de Juárez 'were registered as economically active, of which 0.91% were unemployed. The predominant economic sector was the tertiary sector (74.22%) before the secondary sector (12.89%) and the primary (11.56%). 2% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
