Villa (place name)
Villa (from Latin villa "country estate") is today a place name in various Romanic languages in different forms . Since the Latin language was predominantly used for documents in Germany up to the High Middle Ages, localities were often referred to as “villa”.
Spanish
In Spain [ ˈbija ], as well as in its former colonies in America , villa is the name of a city of the second rank , in contrast to the cities of the first rank ( Ciudad ) and the capitals or capitales (ptg. Capitaes ).

Portuguese
The Vila ([ ˈwilɐ ]) is in Portugal and its former colonies in Africa ( PALOP ) and America ( Brazil ) a designation of a small town and thus a town of the second rank, compared to the towns of the first rank, the Cidades .
In Portugal in particular, the term vila has a more far-reaching design. The designation is given by a parliamentary resolution and is linked to special criteria.
The Vila is only an honorary title in the entire Portuguese-speaking area , further rights or z. B. a different position in the administrative structure of Portugal are not associated with it.
French
In France , the Ville describes a city . The INSEE statistical office determines the status based on various criteria. The village has to have at least 2,000 inhabitants and have a continuous development.
In other French-speaking countries, different criteria apply to the status of the Ville. In Algeria , for example, a ville must have at least 20,000 inhabitants, while in Belgium the name is an honorary nickname, and in Canada it has the official status of a town.
