Santo Domingo Tehuantepec is a municipality in the Mexican state of Oaxaca . The municipal area extends over an area of 1208.9 km², the 2010 census counted 61,872 inhabitants in the municipality. The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is the eponymous Santo Domingo Tehuantepec .

The municipality of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec is located at an altitude of up to 1400 m in the Tehuantepec district of the Istmo region . 80.68% of the municipal area belong to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre del Sur , 19.32% belong to the Cordillera Centroamericana . Not quite half of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec is in the catchment area of the Río Tehuantepec , another 50% belong to the hydrological region of the Pacific coast of Oaxaca and about 2% of the municipality drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Río Coatzacoalcos . About 73% of the municipality are occupied by rainforests, about 19% are used for agriculture.
The Municipio Santo Domingo Tehuantepec consists of a much larger southern part on the Pacific coast and an exclave inland. The southern part borders on the Municipios Magdalena Tequisistlán , Santa María Jalapa del Marqués , Santa María Mixtequilla , San Pedro Comitancillo , San Blas Atempa , San Pedro Huilotepec , Salina Cruz , Santiago Astata , San Pedro Huamelula and Santo Domingo San Miguel Tenango . The northern part of the municipality around the town of San José el Paraíso is enclosed by the municipalities Santiago Lachiguiri and Santiago Ixcuintepec .

In the 2010 census, 61,872 people were counted in the municipality, making Santo Domingo Tehuantepec one of the ten most populous municipalities in Oaxaca. 8.97% of them spoke an indigenous language and 11.73% were illiterate. 38.27% of the residents of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec were registered as economically active, of which 9.98% were unemployed. The predominant economic sector was the tertiary sector (65.38%), another 16% of the working population worked in the secondary sector and 18.09% in the primary sector. 8.8% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
