The Munot Guardian, or since 2017 the Munot Guardian, performs the office of the tower keeper in the tower of Munot Fortress . The office on the Emmersberg zu Schaffhausen has been practically completely occupied since the second half of the 12th century, and on the predecessor "Annot" until 1589.

history

Until 1926, the Munot watchman looked after the fire watch as well as the war watch.

In addition, it was his job to observe shipping traffic on the Rhine and to announce approaching merchant ships - depending on their size - by blowing horns and flag signals. The latter served to inform merchants and dock workers who rushed to unload the " Lädinen " and " Segmer " arriving from the Lake Constance ports. They had to be unloaded quickly, as the Rhine Falls prevented further travel and the city of Schaffhausen thus gave the city of Schaffhausen stacking rights and handling rights "by the grace of God".

The Schaffhausen authorities attached great importance to the Munot watchman fulfilling his duties. So he was first obliged never to leave the Munot. He was only allowed to attend the service on Sunday and to take a bath every second Sunday in the city bathhouse . At a later point in time, these regulations were relaxed and then limited to a ban on taverns and the obligation to stay away from all social occasions. According to the council minutes of May 30, 1554, the watchman should “keep watch on the Thurn, report the hours of blowing at night and not overload himself with wine, and be forbidden to all parties and sausages. If he wants to go in there, he should go up the Thurn with his joy! "
