The Arabic al-Murabitun ( French Mouvement des Nasséristes Indépendants Al-Mourabitoun , Arabic المرابطون, DMG al-murābiṭūn ) means "the men of the Ribat " and describes the Nassist Murabitun party, which was particularly strongly represented in Beirut during the civil wars in Lebanon (1958; 1975-1990) .

history

Founded in 1958 as a militia, it was initially defeated during the Lebanon crisis in 1958 in fighting with President Camille Chamoun's army and the US troops that had landed in support of him , and was largely insignificant.

During the civil war in Lebanon (1975-1991) she was allied with the Lebanese Patriotic Movement under the leadership of Kamal Jumblat , then his son Walid and the Druze PSP . Murabitun militiamen also fought in Sidon , Tripoli and Tire .

The militia fought the most violent fighting in 1976 against the Phalange and in 1982 against the Israelis who besieged Beirut from June 14 to August 21, 1982. In 1985 she was crushed by a coalition of the Amal militia , PSP and communists and has since been insignificant, at least in the capital. In 1985, under its founder and commander Ibrahim Qoleilat , it still numbered 5,000 men (according to its own information 7,000 men and 13,000 reservists) and fought from Sidon together with the PLO against the Christian South Lebanese army , which was allied with Israel .

In 2005, this militia moved back into the limelight after massive stocks of weapons were found on some of their veterans .
