Betty Amann

Betty Amann , actually Philippine Amann , (born March 10, 1907 in Pirmasens , † August 3, 1990 in Danbury , Connecticut ) was a German-American actress .

Life

Born in 1907 in Pirmasens, Betty Amann grew up mainly in the USA from 1908 on. There she began her acting career in 1926 with the film The Kick-Off . In 1928 she returned to Germany and played alongside Gustav Fröhlich the main female role in Asphalt under the director Joe May , who discovered her for German films together with producer Erich Pommer . With the start of the sound film , she continued to shoot in Germany, including the crime thriller Hans in allen Gassen by Carl Froelich with Hans Albers .

From 1931 Amann also worked in England . Alfred Hitchcock hired her for his feature film We're rich at last . She had one of her last appearances in German film in 1933 in tow tractor M 17 with Heinrich George . After the National Socialists came to power , she received no more offers due to her Jewish origins, so she emigrated to the USA in 1937. There she could not build on her earlier successes. Her last role was in Edgar G. Ulmer's Isle of Forgotten Sins in 1943 .

In 1987, Betty Amann received the gold film tape for many years of outstanding work in German film. She died in 1990 at the age of 83. She was married to David B. Stillman.
