The Muricinae are a subfamily of the porcupine snails (Muricidae) within the Neogastropoda . According to the current state of knowledge, it comprises a total of around 780 valid names. Of these, 378 are fossil species , 400 are recent species.

features

The housings are spindle-shaped with an open siphon channel. The spiral sculpture consists of varices (raised axial sculptural elements more clearly than ribs) and spiral rows of nodes: infrasutural ridges (IP), six ridges on the convex part of the turn (P1 to P6), adapical ridge of the siphon canal (ADP) and the extreme adapical ridges of the Siphon channel (EAB1 to 3). The internal teeth of the outer lip are poorly developed. The protoconch indicates a planktotrophic development. It is conical, the surface is smooth or has a granular microstructure. The shell consists exclusively of aragonitic layers. The nucleus of the operculum sits subapically (i.e., below the apex of the operculum). The radula consists of a single tooth plate with a lateral tooth, a lateral tip, a central tip, a lateral tip and a lateral tooth.

Systematics

The subdivision of the porcupine snails (Muricidae) into a total of ten subfamilies is mainly based on the work of Bouchet & Rocroi (2005), who also delimited the subfamily Muricinae by evaluating current morphological and molecular data. According to the state of knowledge, however, this subfamily is likely to be a polyphyletic taxon . According to the traditional view, the group comprises 47 genera and sub-genera. These can be assigned to five informal groups:

1. Muricinae (ss) group

2. Pterynotus-Textilomurex group

3. Group of basal Muricidae

4. Calotrophon Attiliosa Group

5. Aspelloid group

In particular, the classification of the last four groups in the subfamily of Muricinae currently appears provisional. A regrouping may be necessary based on new molecular data.
