Muriel Sarkany (born August 5, 1974 in Brussels ) is a Belgian sport climber who is mainly successful in the lead discipline (difficult climbing ) . With a total of five overall World Cup victories, she is one of the most successful competitive climbers .

Career

Sarkany started climbing at the age of 15, and in 1992 she won the World Youth Championships in Basel. From 1997 she became one of the dominant climbers in lead competitions, was vice world champion four times, won the European championship in 1998 and from 1999 to 2001 three times in a row the prestigious Rockmaster in Arco . She achieved her greatest success in 2003 with a victory at the World Championships in Chamonix , after she had previously twice beaten her long-term competitor Liv Sansoz and once Martina Cufar. In the course of her career she was able to win a total of more than 30 competitions, five times she was first in the World Cup overall standings.

Sarkany is one of the few women in the world who can climb rock routes up to 8c + difficulty , and she was also able to climb routes up to 8a + onsight . On November 21, 2013, she was able to increase her climbing level to 9a with the Punt-X route. This makes her the fifth woman in the world to have succeeded in a red point ascent of this degree.
