The Musée de Picardie in Amiens is one of the most important and comprehensive regional museums in France . It has been classified as a Musée de France since 2002 ; the building has been designated as a monument historique since 2012 .

location

The museum is housed in a palace-like building from the 19th century about one kilometer southwest of the cathedral . The Musée de l'Hôtel de Berny assigned to it is located in a separate building about 200 meters south of the cathedral ( 49 ° 53 ′ 34 ″  N , 2 ° 18 ′ 9 ″  E ).

history

In 1802, on the occasion of the signing of the Treaty of Amiens, the Musée Napoleon was opened. In the years 1855–1867 the new museum building, specially designed for this purpose, was built and is still in use today. The number of visitors is around 50,000 per year.

In 2020 the museum reopened after it had previously been closed for several years for renovation.

  • In the basement there is the archaeological department, which in turn is subdivided into the areas of prehistory , Egypt , Greece and Gallo-Roman culture
  • The ground floor presents the art of the Middle Ages with works from the 9th – 15th centuries. Century.
  • On the upper floor there is an extensive collection of sculptures and paintings, the majority of which includes works by important European artists of the 17th to 20th centuries.

The extremely elegant natural and brick building ( brique et pierre ) in the Louis XIII style , which dates from the first half of the 17th century but was slightly modified in the 18th and 19th centuries , originally belonged to the treasurer ( trésorier ) of Picardy and became part of the city bequeathed to an extensive regional historical furniture and picture collection in 1957 by the then owner Gérard de Berny . The building has been classified as a monument historique since 1993 .
