The catharus or Nachtigall chokes ( Catharus ) are a genus from the family of the chokes (Turdidae), the twelve types found in North, Central and South America. The generic name is derived from the Greek καθαρός (katharós = pure), which refers to the unspotted plumage of the type species , the golden-billed muse thrush ( Catharus aurantiirostris ). These are mostly hidden birds that are known for their pleasant song.

features

The muse thrushes are inconspicuous, darkly colored birds. Some species have a black cap. The belly of most species is light with dark spots. The outermost wings of the wings are long.

distribution

All species overwinter in tropical Central and South America from Mexico to Peru. The Bicknell's thrush ( Catharus bicknelli ), Wilson's throttle ( Catharus fuscescens ), the Gray-cheeked thrush ( Catharus minimus ), the Hermit throttle ( Catharus guttata ) and the dwarf throttle ( Catharus ustulatus ) are migratory, which pull to breed to North America and occasionally as mistakenly find their way also occur in Europe. The other species are tropical resident birds .
