The Museo Sorolla

The Museo Sorolla is a will-based Madrid museum. The museum is located in the Barrio de Almagro in the Chamberí district in central Madrid.

history

The widow of the painter Joaquín Sorolla , Clotilde García del Castillo, bequeathed all of her property to the Spanish state in 1925, which on March 28, 1931, accepted the donation with the obligation to create a museum foundation. In 1932 the museum was opened in the painter's former villa. The house was built by the architect Enrique María de Repullés y Vargas (1845–1922) between 1910 and 1911. The painter's son, Joaquín Sorolla García , became the museum's first director until his death in 1948. The collection, initially mainly works by Sorolla's father, was expanded through acquisitions and as of 2018 comprises 1,294 works by Sorolla.
