Aureliano de Beruete came from a wealthy family. He first studied law at the University of Madrid and graduated with a doctorate in 1867. During his studies he took drawing lessons from Carlos Múgica . In 1871 and 1872 de Beruete was a member of the Spanish Parliament Cortes Generales . He then ended his political career to devote himself entirely to painting. From 1874 to 1878 he took painting lessons from Carlos de Haes at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. He also built up his own art collection, which included works by El Greco , Francisco de Goya and Diego Velázquez , for example . In the following years he made numerous trips through the various Spanish provinces and through several European countries. De Beruete was one of the co-founders of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza , a reservoir for progressive intellectuals.

Beruete's early work is clearly under the influence of his teacher Carlos de Haes. At the beginning he mainly painted small-format landscapes in the style of academic naturalism . He found his motifs mainly in the landscape of Castile . He also copied works by Velázquez in the Museo del Prado . In 1878 he met the Spanish painter Martín Rico in Paris, through whom he became acquainted with works from the Barbizon School . The significantly lighter style of painting of the French painters had a lasting influence on de Beruete's style. In addition to Rico, his friends also included the painters Joaquín Sorolla and Ramon Casas , who both painted portraits of de Beruete.

With great success, de Beruete took part in the annual Madrid art exhibitions, where he received several medals for his work. In 1878 his painting Orillas del Manzanares ( On the banks of the Manzanares ) and in 1884 the picture Orillas de Avia ( On the banks of the Avia ) were awarded. In addition, he received a medal in 1901 for his complete works. Another medal followed in 1904 for the painting El cementerio viejo . In addition, he was a member of the international jury of the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1889 and Paris in 1900 . In addition to being made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor , he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Orden de Isabel la Católica in his home country . In his late painting work, especially from 1906, de Beruete developed into impressionism . An example of this is his painting El Manzanares bajo el puente de los Franceses . The art historian Joaquín de la Puente certified de Beruete in his late work "a very bright and colorful impressionistic painting style". His work also includes numerous works on paper. This includes a series of drawings that de Beruete made between 1883 and 1885 as illustrations for the novel series Episodios nacionales by Benito Pérez Galdós .

In the last years of his life, de Beruete wrote a number of articles on art for Spanish and foreign magazines. In 1898 he also wrote an important biography of Velázquez in French. This was also published in English in 1906 and in German in 1909, but was not published in Spanish during his lifetime. He also wrote eight essays about his friend Joaquín Sorolla. After de Beruete's death, Sorolla organized a retrospective for his friend in his Madrid home.

De Beruete's son, who was also called Aureliano de Beruete, was director of the Museo del Prado from 1918 to 1922.
