Foundation and beginnings

Whale skeletons in the lobby

In 1904 the museum project "Museum voor het Onderwijs" ( German  Museum for Teaching ) was initiated by the newspaper publisher Frits van Paasschen. He wanted a museum where children could learn about industry. The first museum director, however, became a geologist , Herman van Cappelle, who pushed the collection towards natural history and ethnology rather than industry and technology. What remained of the ideas of van Paaschen above all was the original educational concept. From the early beginnings until today, special lessons are held for youth groups, thematically based on the existing museum pieces. The Education Museum was the first in the Netherlands in 1910 to show educational films.

Time as a community museum

In 1920 the private project “Museum for Teaching” became an institution of the political municipality of The Hague. The museum often changed its location until the community decided to commission architect Wim Quist to build their own building. This was completed in 1985 in the "International Zone" of The Hague. Since then the museum has been called Museon. In 1997 the museum was privatized again.

Educational mandate

The Museon offers educational events and programs for a wide audience, but the majority of visitors are school groups. The offer should convey knowledge about people and their close connection to nature, but also culture, in an understandable way. The collection currently comprises around 260,000 objects.
