The Museu Antônio Parreiras (MAP), German Antônio Parreiras Museum , is an artist Museum , the preservation of memory and works by Antônio Parreiras (1860-1937), one of the most important Brazilian painter of the Belle Époque Rio de Janeiro dedicated, . It is located on Rua Tiradentes in the Ingá district ( bairro ) in Niterói in the state of Rio de Janeiro . history

The former residence of Parreiras is a mansion designed by Ramos de Azevedo (1851–1928) and built in 1894, one of the town villas in Rio. It's one of the more important buildings that the versatile São Paulo-based architect designed in the metropolitan area of ​​Rio de Janeiro .

The museum was inaugurated on January 21, 1942 and is located in three buildings that belonged to the painter and his family: his former residence, his studio, and the residence of his son Dakir (1894–1967) and daughter Olga. The exhibition rooms and the administration of the museum were installed in the former residence. There are further exhibition rooms in his studio, which was built in 1912.

The museum was added to the list of cultural monuments in 1967 by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN). The 4000 square meter garden was designed and planted by the artist.

The first museum director was the art critic Jefferson Ávila Júnior . After his death in 1973, Carlos Roberto Maciel Levy followed until 1976 . The art scholar Kátia de Marco is currently (as of 2018) the director of the museum.

The MAP collection shows two essential aspects of Parreira's contribution to the history of Brazilian culture: his impressionistic interpretation of the Brazilian environment and his already modern attitude towards the actual modern, the modernismo brasileiro .

Antônio Parreiras was a landscape painter and representative of plein air painting . He was influenced by the German art professor Johann Georg Grimm , the painters around Grimm later became known as Grupo Grimm , of which works are also in the museum. He saw his task in transforming the light of Brazil into color. He traveled to and also wandered through Brazil, making numerous sketches.

The museum's collection consists of more than 2000 objects and is divided into an artistic and a non-artistic part. The artistic collection includes paintings and drawings from the years 1883 to 1937 as well as works of Brazilian art from the 19th and 20th centuries by painters such as Georg Grimm, Nicolau Antonio Facchinetti (1824–1900), Eliseu Visconti (1866–1944), Henrique Cavalleiro (1892–1975) or to Lucílio and Georgina de Albuquerque . It also contains works of European art with Flemish, French and Italian paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries from the Alberto Lamego collection. The non-artistic area includes personal items of the artist and shows painting utensils such as palettes, brushes, easels, painting boxes, furniture, documents, manuscripts, photographs and glass negatives as well as a small library.
