The Museum Pedagogical Center Munich (MPZ) is a joint institution of the Free State of Bavaria and the City of Munich with the "task of providing educational work in schools and other educational institutions through museum-pedagogical offers in cooperation with museums, collections and exhibitions in Bavaria, especially in Munich support and offer didactic programs for different target groups ”.

The center was founded in 1973 and since May 2008 the MPZ has been an independent institution subordinate to the central museum administration of Bavaria.

School and museum

The MPZ organizes programs for school classes in Bavaria's art and cultural history as well as natural science museums and collections. The museum visit should appeal to the children's joy of discovery and creativity. The visits are connected with targeted learning and doing. Practical work in one of the MPZ studios often follows, such as B. painting, drawing and working, scenic play or scientific experimentation.

Profession-specific tours are designed for vocational schools, which are based on the training curricula of the professional groups. In this way, the MPZ develops didactic offers for museums as a partner. The speakers are educators and specialists. The MPZ works together with the Art and Culture Pedagogical Center of the Museums in Nuremberg , the State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research Munich and the Department for Education and Sport Munich.

Didactic advice for museums

Upon request, the MPZ advises museums on the design of special and permanent exhibitions. A focus is placed on didactics , but also on general problems and, above all, visitor-oriented communication. In addition, the MPZ takes on the training of management staff in the field of museum education .

Advanced training

One focus of the work of the MPZ is the advanced training of teachers, participants in study seminars and educational specialists. The MPZ is a recognized advanced training facility of the Free State of Bavaria. It works with the Pedagogical Institute of the City of Munich and the Academy for Teacher Training and Personnel Management in Dillingen.

Free time in the museum

The “Leisure in the Museum” program is designed for children, young people and families. This includes children's birthdays in the museum, holiday activities and exploring a museum together with a workshop program afterwards.

Daycare centers and museum

In cooperation with educational specialists, the MPZ has developed a guided tour for children from day care centers. The children should be encouraged to look and listen carefully and, according to their abilities, to take part in a guided tour or afterwards.

Publications on museums and museum education

The MPZ publishes thematic handouts that are intended to support museum visits. These handouts differ from catalogs primarily in the didactic preparation of the factual information. Depending on the target group, there are discovery books for independent discovery of museums and exhibitions, junior catalogs for exhibitions, cultural trails or manuals on museum education.
