In Germany, the day is under the patronage of the incumbent Federal Council President . The International Museum Day in Germany is proclaimed by the German National Committee of the International Museum Council ( ICOM Germany ) and organized by the German Museum Association in cooperation with the numerous regional museum associations and offices of the federal states. The German Museum Association has taken on the central coordination of Museum Day. The major event has been supported nationwide for years by the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe and other foundations.

Numerous museums - from local and regional museums to large state institutions - present themselves on this day with special activities such as special tours, a look behind the scenes, workshops, museum festivals and long museum nights with free admission.

description

Between 1977 and 1989 this day was also celebrated in the GDR , during which museum employees were often honored. In the old Federal Republic of Germany, this day was not used until the end of the 1990s, on the initiative of the Museum Association of Saxony-Anhalt, to present the German museum landscape to a large audience nationwide.

Since 1992 the motto of the Museum Day has been adopted by the International Council of Museums ( ICOM) and which is intended to clearly highlight the international community of museums.

The International Museum Day wants to bring the diverse museum landscape into the public eye and draw attention to the broad spectrum of museum work and the thematic diversity of the more than 6000 museums in Germany . He wants to give museums and their employees around the world the opportunity to jointly point out the importance of their work as a contribution to cultural and social life and to encourage a visit to the museum.

Often, during the museum day, otherwise inaccessible depots are opened for interested visitors. Some museums offer museum festivals the evening before, in order to be able to celebrate the International Museum Day.

In Germany, this museum day increasingly developed into a family Sunday with a wide range of offers for every age group. Many of the events are free of charge.

Quotes

Federal Council President Harald Ringstorff in his welcoming address for the 30th International Museum Day in: Deutscher Museumsbund (Ed.): Das MuseumsMagazin. People | Treasuries | Stories . 2007, p. 5

“Museums are the guardians of the past, the reflection of our cultural present and the visionaries of the future. All of this is to be discovered on International Museum Day. "

York Langenstein, President of ICOM Germany , in an interview with Alexa von der Brelje in: see above p. 46 "Interview"

“Already behind the founding of the International Council of Museums ICOM in 1946 was the 'late enlightenment' idea that museums, as cultural institutions, make a contribution to human education. ICOM sees museums as active centers of cultural exchange. They should contribute to enriching cultures, developing mutual understanding and ultimately also to promoting peace among peoples. The International Museum Day is the day of the museums for the visitors and marks a counter position to the museum in the ivory tower. The impetus for the International Museum Day came from America, where the visitor-oriented museum was called for very early on under the motto put the visitors first. The International Museum Day not only wants to bring people to the museum, but also to bring the museums to the people. "

Susanne Kopp-Sievers, managing director of the Museumsverband Sachsen-Anhalt e. V., in an interview with Alexa von der Brelje in: see above p. 46 "Interview". When asked: The museums enjoy a very high number of visitors. Do we even need International Museum Day?

“Absolutely yes! The day gives the museums the chance to draw attention to themselves nationwide on a special day and to advertise themselves. The museums in the region, which are otherwise not in the focus of the general public, benefit from this in particular. All visitors have the opportunity to get to know the museums from a different perspective than 'just' through the exhibition. With their active participation and variety of programs on the International Museum Day, the museums in Germany also give the signal to belong to the international museum community and to see themselves as places of cultural exchange in a worldwide network.
